Marans |
The Marans breed was developed in the early 1900's and originated in Western France in the town of Marans. The Marans is known fot the dark chocolate colored eggs tha thet lay. Marans are a fast growing bird, with cocks weighing in at 8 pounds and hens at 7 pounds. Marans also do well in damp areas making this an ideal breed choice for a dual purpose breed here in the rain forest of Oregon! There are 8 varieties of Marans recognized by the French Breed Standard, they are Silver Cuckoo, Gold Cuckoo, Black Wheaton, Black Tailed Fawn , Black copper, and Ermine. We are currently working with Black Copper, Blue Copper and Cuckoo. |
The eggs on the left or Marans eggs, The egs on the right are a cross from an Aracauna and Penedesenca |
These are hatching eggs I recently purchased from breeders. The eggs on the left are a combination of Blue and Black Copper Marans, the eggs on the right are Blue Marans. We got several chicks from the eggs on the left and only one from the eggs on the right, but we are recording what chick came out of what egg to make long term egg color and darkness improvements in our flock. We will be trying another batch of the Blue Marans eggs on the right |
